Hi Guys,
I own 2 Saabs; 2001 conv. and this car, which is my 4th Saab. This 1996 900S has 70,000 miles on it. Recently I would be driving along and the car's dash would light up like it was shutting down, and then it would go back to normal. This happened three or four times in a month. When I had the oil changed at Foreign Traffic in Allison Park, PA near Pittsburgh (good bunch of mechanics, very fair and know their stuff) I asked them to check it out. They didn't have a computer analizer as Saab wants a fair amount for the software every year so weren't able to find anything.
I took it to the dealer, P&W Saab in Pittsburgh and they put it on their computer and found nothing. They said the starter was going which I knew.
A couple weeks later I was up in Butler where I teach, I came out, got in the car and it wouldn't start. Didn't seem to be getting and juice to the spark plugs. The starter was turning the engine over fine. I tried several times with waiting in between in case it might be a flooding problem. Can you do that with fuel injection? Finally a friend drove me home back to Pittsburgh. That was a Friday.
The following Monday I was going to have the car towed, but I thought, I will give it one more try. It started right up so I drove it to Foreign Tech in Butler. Sal is a good mechanic and works on everything including Ferraris. He kept it for a couple weeks, drove it as his personal car. Traced all the wiring, replaced the starter which it needed and felt that it must be the coil so replace that. I picked up the car and drove it home and back and forth to school for a couple days. Everything seemed OK.
A couple days ago I was in Squirrel Hill for a 3 hour class. I came out, got in the car, and it wouldn't start. I tried but no luck. Took the bus home. Monday I will take the bus back there and see if it might start like it did before.
I own a couple Kawasakis and was reading on the ZRX1100 owners association and read the following which made me wonder:
"I park the freshly paid off 2000 Chevy S10 in the airport parking. We return last night and the pickup will not start. 4.3L V6 standard. It rained 12 inches in 4 days (we have had some rain for several days in Pittsburgh) It will crank over and tries to start but acts as if its not getting fuel. then I get the "security" light on the dash."
Another member responds: "I don't know squat about your truck, but it sure sounds like an alarm system issue to me. It disables the fuel injectors. You will have fuel pressure but the injectors wont fire. Your problem is likely a broken wire that isnt allowing the signal to be sent to the computer telling it that this is the correct key for the vehicle. There is no computer chip in the key itself, there may be a resistor.. the proper resistance is what the computer senses. Most of the time the little red wire out of the ignition that carries the passlock signal gets broken..ya can't splice it as it will change the resistance value and cause a malfunction. Often these get broken inside the insulation and go intermittently...if ya have a tilt wheel this is very likely.
Does this ring any bells with any of you?? Thanks for any help or suggestions.
Joe
