Correct, they should be as close as possible in a ideal environment preferably inches at most apart. However cars are not very ideal :( Also the fewer the speakers the better! So when you see cars with more then a simple component set up front it's a BAD thing for SQ! IT can make it a LOT harder to get proper imaging.
I would love to be able to compare a setup like what you have to a setup with just dash tweeters & a few other options to see how they all compare. My viggen's system is unfortunantly still stock thus I haven't played with it yet.
In my SPG I have done numerous setups (6.5's in the door, kicks, dash speakers etc) in my old SPG & BY FAR the best was a simply kick panel buildouts with the 6.5's & tweeters right next to each other. However I was able to image the tweeters the proper way thus they do not need the upstage setup like you used.
That site stateing DON'T MOUNT 6.5's in the kicks & always use the doors isn't true! You need to take each car individually because cars are built differently thus the doors many times are not forward enough to get proper sound.
