Turbocharged engines run well on ethanol blends, especially those that already have aftermarket fuel manangement systems for higher performance.
The NG900 engine runs fine on a blend of 1/3 E85 to 2/3 conventional fuel. In fact, it runs very well, because the E85 raises the effective octane, so it is a little like running race fuel at the price of unleaded... :))) Only bad effect is an occasional rough idle after start on very cold mornings.
Somewhere between 33% and 40% E85 the ecu reaches the limit of its adaptation ability, and generates occasional CELs for running lean.
Beyond that point, the T5 would require larger fuel injectors, or a software upgrade, or both.
Cars with T7 ignitions can be converted more easily, and genuinesaab.com already has the ecu software to do that.
Material compatibility is not the big issue any more, but EPA rules are.
So far EPA all but prohibits the conversion of almost all vehicles under their jurisdiction to ANY alternative fuel, including E85. That means ALL cars designed to run on unleaded fuel, regardless of lower emissions from E85 and other fuels. The rules are very tight, and essentially limit FFV's to new production from a major manufacturer.
Only cars made before unleaded fuel can be converted legally.
