... but, I think that's somewhat normal. I've read elsewhere that the 3rd gear syncros are fairly weak and that rushing that shift can cause a bit of a 'crunch.' If I really push mine I get a little bit of a crunch from 2nd to 3rd. How many miles are on yours? Have you flushed the trannny lately?
As for reverse, when the engine is idling, the car is in neutral and the clutch is out, the whole input shaft and gear set is spinning. As soon as the clutch is pressed, the physical connection between the engine and the transmission is 'broken.' However, the inertia of the spinning gear set keeps it everything spinning for a short period of time. Reverse doesn't have any syncromesh whatsoever, so, if you throw it into reverse while the input shaft and gears are still spinning: CRUNCH! So, having to pause before you put it into reverse is completely normal, AFAIK.
