What happened was that the bottom part of of the sheating bracket gave up.
The cable can and will break in three to four different ways.
The top and bottom part of cable/wire break off leaving you with no clutch operation at all.
The other very common one is that the plastic bracket that is situated on top of transmission breaks in a way that it start to slide up onto the cable sheating, making the self adjuster reach its maximum.
And the 4th problem is that the self adjuster slips and you loose some clutch movement.
The 4th problem is the only one that can be fixed by wiggling the cable.
It is a design flaw in the plastic cable bracket leaving too much space between the plastic stop and the rubber grommet. That will make the cable sheating and the forces of clutch operation work only on the bottom part of the bracket. Soon, the cable sheating will break the plastic bottom as in picture and poke through.
That will make the self adjuster max out and you need to replace the cable.
What I have done lately is to use one of the thicker 8mm washers that are found at exhaust manifold studs, cut a groove right through it and place it around the wire and between the plastic bracket and rubber grommet.
That will take up the void created by the design flaw and extend the life of the cable, at least until it breaks at the upper or lower part of wire.
