yea..... it's true that the car was $38K ish when new (my viggen was $40K+ but I purchased it used) however last I checked your 97 is pushing 10 yrs old (my viggen will be 7 soon) thus stuff is going to happen! If you also would of done a little research you would of known that the newer convertibles have a new machanism due to the troubles with the setup that you have. My parents 99 9-3 convert has been completely trouble free :)
I have been driving saabs since 86 & my viggen, brothers 98 900 set & 04 93 ss aero as well as my parents convertible are by far the most reliable saabs we have owned. I still have a SPG & it's definantly the most fun car to drive that I have however reliable it definantly isn't :)
for my viggen the only parts I can think of which I feel were poorly designed are the SID & DI. The SID hasn't been fixed however the T7 DI's have been improved to the point were they do not fail. Otherwise I really cannot think of anything that's poorly made.... o yea.... the dam chassis is weak :(
