Electrical issue, alternator?

I have a 2000 9-3 hatch (base model, not SE) with 106,000 miles on it. Yesterday (Sunday), I had trouble cranking the engine and had to get is started with jumper cables. It acted like a low charged battery, but I doubted it was the battery at the time because it is a Optima red top battery that is only about 18 months old. On the way home (about a 10 mile drive), I stopped at an auto parts store to have the battery and alternator tested. The store employee hooked it up to a tester and said it almost certainly was the alternator because there was no increase in voltage at the battery terminals when I took the engine up to 2,000 RPM in neutral. (The original alternator has never been replaced.)
I got the car home, and figured I would need to get a new alternator installed today. This morning, however, it started up and seemed to run just fine. I called my local indy Saab shop and asked if I could bring it in. They said they were pretty booked today and could I bring it in on Tuesday. I described the problem and the service manager said it is likely not the alternator or the car would not have run today due to the battery charge being depleted with the limited driving I did.
So, what might it be? If the test device said there was no increased voltage from the alternator when the engine wasn't idling, it sure sounds like the alternator.
