Now that's a good question isn't it. I have a '00 5 spd.9-5 Aero sedan and '03 auto 9-3 SE convertible. The 9-5 has a much better ride and in stock condition is better handling (at least in Aero trim). The 9-3 with a few mods (22mm rear sway bar, steering rack clamp and 17 inch wheels and tires) is now better handling and more fun except for the ride. Of course the fun factor is helped by the fact that it is a convertible.
Which should you get? Well if you have a family, the 9-5, if not the 9-3. Slap on the 22m sway bar and the steering rack clamp (you get them from site sponsor genuinesaab.com) and you will love the 9-3. Especially in SE trim with the 205 BHP motor. As to reliability, it is a tose up, they are both pretty good for European cars. Don't use this board to rate reliability by the way, this is a problem solving forum and that is what people report. Rarely do you get somebody saying they have had no problems.
If you are interested, on the 9-5, the air bag computer, the SID and the Ignition Cassette (DIC) were replaced under warranty. For the 9-3, there have been no unscheduled repairs, just scheduled maintenance albeit the DIC is dying, so my reliability has been quite good.
