A while back I asked about the awful rattle the left front suspension of my '99 Viggen was making. I finally have had an opportunity to take off the wheels and poke around a little.

The CV joints appear intact on both sides. No tears in the boots and no goopy grease anywhere.

The boot around the left tie rod end ball joint is cracked and probably needs attention, but I don't think that's the culprit.

With the left side jacked up (right side still on the ground), I pulled on the left front wheel in various directions. When I wiggled it side to side (in a steering input sort of way) there was a noticable rattle from the strut. It looked like the strut was rotating a little while I did this as well. No noise from fore-aft or in-out movement. The right side was silent when I jacked it up and did the same thing.

I should mention that I had all the shocks replaced a couple of months ago at the dealer and there was no noise until a month or so after that job was done.

The rattle happens whenever the car goes over a bump of any kind (like a tar strip, or even just from the camber change of turning from one street onto another). It used to happen only during right turns, but now seems to happen just about whenever. It's really loud in the car and sounds like something is going to fall off. In fact, it's got my wife ready to get rid of the car entirely.

Help please! We feel very strongly about not going back to the dealer (only one within 3 hours of us), so if there's something I can find or fix myself, I'd appreciate it.
