I usually use a little dab of locktite on each screw and that holds them quite well.
The theory that I've heard stems from poor maintenance and the dielectric oil leaking out of the coils. Updated DIC designs have solved the oil leakage issue, to my knowledge.
Whereas if the spark gaps gets too large, it makes the plugs draw more current, thus, overheating the coils. The overheated coils will eventually fail. So, very regular re-gapping is apparently important. I re-gap mine every oil change (every 5k). The gap widens only a few thousandths in that time, so, it's always within spec. The electrodes always appear to be in good condition, so, I don't replace them. I've heard of some folks replacing the plugs every 10k, but, if the electrodes are still in good condition, why throw $$ and good parts away. Use of proper plugs are also very important.
Of course, this is hearsay, but, I figure that a little extra effort is no big deal.
