How not to break mirror triangles (contrary to Haynes).
For anyone searching this out in the future, I did this in about 15 minutes without breaking anything. Here's how:
1. roll down the drivers window for full access in and out, then open the door to maximize your work area.
2. The inner triangle both SLIDES DOWN with an inch long finger latch below the center and bottom edge of the triangle. It also has TWO PINS (split pins) that push into 2 holes in the door, that is they push into them from the direction of the cabin towards the door/outside world.
Read that twice, because that's where the tension is. One locking mechanism on the triangle slides down into the door panels somewhat deeply. The other two click into the door in a different direction (ie. towards the outside world).
3. Haynes says push a screwdriver up underneath the bottom edge of the triangle. The only way that would work is if you were sure you were contacting the the upside down L shaped finger that slides down into the door panel and then pushed/pried the whole triangle up. (problem is you will be fighting against those 2 pins i mentioned).
4. I pushed that up a bit, but then turned my attention to the other 2 sides of the triangle. prying in there a bit til I figured it out. Once I could see the pins I realized what was going on and STOPPED USING A SCREWDRIVER.
I think if you use a screwdriver beyond the loosening point, you will certainly break something here. as soon as it was loose enough to get my fingers under it I grasped it with both hands (the two sides, not the bottom of the triangle), wiggling and pulling outward (in towards the cabin i mean), first one pin popped out then the other, the last thing is to pull straight up where you slide that finger/key up out of the door panel.
Unplug the wire, gently pull back the sticky cover, undo the 3 bolts, change the mirror assembly, plug it back in, redo the stick cover, and then you realize there's only one way to reverse the process , suggesting there's only one way to remove the triangle! slide key down FIRST (ie it should come out last contrary to Haynes and all the breakages of that part), then push the two pins in til they pop in last (suggesting you should remove those first).
Hope that helps save some of these panels in the future.
