You probably did the right thing by walking away, but if the cosmetics are good and susp. bits/brakes have been maintained, it might be worth getting the engine fully checked out. If whatever the electrical gremlin is can be fixed for under $500, it might not be a bad deal. The Talladegas are a trim-only model, so while rare aren't generally worth more than the "regular" 900se.
Good, well maintained 97 900se's are around $3,500-4,250 at this point depending on mileage.
