NG900 CIL but no code in code reader

I have a 97 900SE and the CEL has come on but when I use my code reader it comes up with no code. I checked the oil and fluids, pulled the plugs and re-gapped them and looked for any obvious vacuum leakes. What else should I look for? I couldn't clear the light with the code reader reset. Is there another way to clear the CEL such as disconnecting the battery? Thanks
