While the calipers are still mounted I sue a flat tire iron made for motorcycle tires to GENTLY compress the piston just enough to get it past the ridge on the rotor. With the caliper removed I use a squeeze clamp ( available at most lumber supply or hardware) They provide more than adequate pressure and because they have soft plastic covers there is no chance of damage to the piston.
