If a car has lug nuts, then there are studs on the hub that you attach the wheel to, and then you screw lug nuts onto those studs to hold the wheel on.
If a car has wheel bolts, then the hub (or brake rotor) has threaded holes. You place the wheel onto the hub, and then screw the bolts into the hub to hold the wheel on.
