Everyone i know questions why I drive these cars (I have more than my share, to say the least) and it seems so simple: Nice ride, affordable, easy enough to work on, excellent mileage and longevity. My last 9000 was over 300,000 miles when the PO bought it back. He then took it from OHIO to Idaho and sold it to my brother in law. He drives it everyday and gets over 30mpg. I didn't abuse the car but the car was abused all the same. It was used as a saab shop tow truck, and a moving van way past its limits and as a safety machine that saved the life of my wife and 3rd, though unborn, child. (after that sacrifice, I had to rebuild her...the car that is.) I remember driving my first saab, an '85 900T sedan, over 100,000 miles (putting her over the 350,000 mark) and knowing nothing about cars, was always so shocked to see cars broken down on the freeway while I drove my 12 year old car full of people, carefree. I sure I was taking great risks all the same, but the car just kept on going...and getting 29-32 mpg all the time.
The knowhow has been there for years, and though the fuel economy hasn't balloon in recent times for SAAB, the environmental impact has diminished though still keeping the same MPG. DOn't think I could get the same from any other make really.
