You don't risk the alternator by holding the key longer than normal. The alternator isn't really doing anything at that point. You starter is getting a workout and you ignition switch is getting worked as well. Do have that battery checked. Have all that stuff checked out. It is usually free at most parts places. They will generally hook up a machine to your battery then have you start the car. The machine will test the starter, alternator and battery during this process and is usually pretty good at pinpointing any problem that might be in the system. If it finds nothing wrong, then we start kicking around fuel ideas in my opinion. Gas gets oxygenated this time of year as well. My cars never run as well but it is supposed to be cleaner for the environment. Sometimes, some cars in some areas of the country just don't run as well with the winter fuel. When I lived in Utah winter meant crappy gas mileage and a rough idle...That's just the way it was.
