I've got an automatic 2002 9-3SE with 31,000 miles. Lately it has developed an intermittent no-start problem when warm. This occurs typically after the engine has been shutoff for maybe 20-40 minutes (such as when you've gone into the grocery store) and then come out and try to start it. The engine spins over fine but there is no hint of any cylinder firing. I checked and there is no problem with the fuel pump The dash lights & gauges all light up and work...except the tach doesn't move when the engine is being cranked over and the only light that stays is the red triangle with admiration mark inside. Generally I try 4-5 cranking sessions, with no starting. If I then wait a few minutes more it generally then starts right up. Starts fine when cold and if it sits for a shorter or longer time. Runs fine otherwise. Any ideas on possible causes?

I tuned-up recently. About 3,000 miles ago (a year) I changed the Ignition Cassette, I tried once with a new DI cassette but it wasn’t the problem since there was no electric pulse to it at the moment that made the failure at a repair shop. However there was a doubt about the Crank position sensor so I changed it couple of days ago, however, yesterday after a couple hours of cool down it almost gave me trouble to start it. Even now when the car is cool I feel it starts with a small delay.

So there is for sure no trouble at all with Fuel pump, DI cassette or crank position sensor.

From other posts there is doubt if it could be the Neutral safety switch? I haven’t had the opportunity to test it since the problem haven appeared lately, but how can find out if that sensor is working properly?

Has this happened to anyone and/or anyone have any ideas? I had a chance to search the threads but no conclusive solution, so I apologize in advance is this is a common problem with an easy fix.

Thanks for your help!
