I opened up the console and took a look at things. Firstly, it was the nastiest job I've ever done on a car. Grease and oil is one thing - tacky coffee and coke with bits of food and the broken off hair from the emergency brake cover - gross.
After taking everything apart, I wasn't able to replicate the sticking solenoid repeatedly. At times it seemed that the hook for the lock might be sticky, but just when I thought I had figured out the right angle to make it stick then it would keep working. :-/
Rather than clean it and put it back together (and maybe not have fixed anything), I just disabled the whole system. It was no problem to removed the solenoid and then take the hook out (2 screws and one cotter pin). Because the solenoid appeared to be hardwired, and I don't have a good wireing diagram, I decided to leave it in. I just removed the hook which is what actually locks the shifter, and replaced the solenoid in its original position (just not connected to anything).
The longest part of the whole job was scrubbing all the trim pieces and trying clean up from all the stuff that had been spilled. However, I'm back on the road it seems to be working well! Thanks for all the advice.
