Wheel Bearing bad almost immediately, how?

OK,I have a 2001 SE 9-3 with about 100,000 miles, I replaced both front wheel bearings just recently (noisy). At first both sides were quiet (I think) but shortly afterwards one side developed what sounded like bearing noise again. My mechanic told me that that wasn't likely. Probably the tire he said. Well I took it in today and sure enough the bearing is noisy. Now what is the probability of the bearing being bad from the start, and what is the probability that my mechanic screwed the pooch?
