Slower driving is safer not just in reaction time but in the amount of momentum you are carrying (proportional to speed, p=m*v) but more importantly kinetic energy (proportional to the speed SQUARED, ek=1/2*m*v^2). From 55mph to 65mph you are carrying 18% more momentum but 40% more energy. From 55mph to 75mph you are carrying 36% more momentum, but 86% more energy, (at 78mph you are carrying twice the energy as at 55mph). Ever since I’ve had kids and the run up in gas prices, I’ve been trying to find that sweet spot between safety, mileage, speed, and not getting run over, (depending on the road, traffic, and speed limit, generally speed limit to 10+). Apparently, fuel consumption in the US leveled off in January for the first time in history, and there is anecdotal evidence commercial truckers are slowing down too. Plenty of studies on how much speeding and frequent lane changes saves on time in city/suburban driving, (assuming you don’t blow reds or other flagrant moves), and it is never much of a savings as it does nothing to get through reds faster, or caught behind slower moving traffic.

Also, I learned to be the king of the coast and trying to time red lights to a degree when approaching them… always kills me when someone speeds just so they spend more time sitting at a red.
