Well, if you know where the clutch cable is, then you could easily check to see if it is too loose or too tight.
Clutch issues sound feasible but then again it could be in the tranny itself. With it not going into reverse, you could have an issue with engine mounts not letting the linkage go where it should. Again, mounts are not that hard to check. If your tranny has a drain on it, you can always drain the fluid (seeing how much you have in there can be a nice treat) and check for excessive filings and worse, chunks of metal. SOme filings would be normal. have someone push the clutch in while you look at it to see how it is functioning. There are ways to at least eliminate some of the exterior bits.
Now, if you haven't thought to check these things and you've been fine cruising down the road with your car acting this way then the issue may very well be an expensive fix because I would assume you to not be a frequent DIYer. I hope my assumption is wrong, for you pocketbook's sake. If you know how to change a clutch, have the tools and the patience, then you can sort out THAT problem for a few hundred dollars. If you can't do it yourself, then you easily breech the grand mark.
