About to do retorque also (again) Posted by turboSTEVE [Email] (#341) [Profile/Gallery] (more from turboSTEVE) on Wed, 18 Jun 2008 10:30:16 In Reply to: Doing headbolts, which of these bolts to buy?, 00 9-3 SE, Wed, 18 Jun 2008 09:19:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hoping to get some more info as well.
On the bolts: 1) I have seen where it is recommended to buy new bolts, but the bolts are steel and the block is aluminum. Personally, I am more concerned with the aluminum failing then the steel "stretching." I'd like to see more on this issue myself. 2) Wouldn't the bolts be more likely to work loose quickly if coated in oil versus being installed clean, maybe with some threadlock or antiseize?
I did the re-torque once previously (at ~100K on my '97 900SE) due to obvious leakage between head and block at front left of engine (driver's side). It appears to be leaking again at ~180K. I replaced a few of the bolts around the leak area using the eeuroparts bolts.
Pointers: Only do one at a time and you can't screw up head gasket. Consider buying a new valve cover gasket and gasket sealant. I replaced mine and have had no issue with valve cover leaking.
