All 2002 9-3s are SEs. Classics are:
1. The plastic cover holding the controls on the left side of the driver's seat breaks off the bayonet mount in front. Bad design by Saab. I don't think they've done anything to fix it. I tried reinforcing one but it still broke. My latest attempt was to trim 1/4" off the lip around the top and front to reduce the pressure from the seat squishing out when you sit on it. So far so good, but it's only been a couple of weeks since I installed it.
2. The pixels in the SID go bad. $100 to repair if you send it to Guy Senesac or BBA Remanufacturing, Inc. Kramer also does SID repairs, but my experience with his repair was less the great. There are many, many posts on this bulletin board about this.
3. Pixels in the ACC go bad. Same solution as #2.
4. Many of the other NG 9-3 cautions (idler pulley, DIC, etc.)apply, but I haven't had any of these problems yet.
My 2002 is the 5th Saab I've owned and besides these 3 issues, it's been a good car. I've had a few other minor things like the thermostat and a few light bulbs to replace. I bought it used at 48,000 mi and it's up to 91,000 mi now. Looks good, really fun to drive and the hatchback is great.
