My boyfriend had a similar car. About a year 1/2 ago a woman ran a red light and slammed into the front passanger side/bumper. The company totalled his car - despite having a stainless steel exhaust, system, aftermarket upgrades, etc. They wanted I think about $400 - $600 to have him buy it back on salvage, and wasn't going to pay a whole lot for the actual damage.
That being said - he went to the yard to take his aftermarket parts back, but the salvage yard guys [or someone else, it was an open yard] had already ripped out his nice cd player.
It was originally towed to the house while we waited for the insurance company to come back with a quote.
Lesson learned: Have it towed to your house. If they total it and give you grief & you don't want to bother salvaging it - take out all your aftermarket parts you can first so you can recoup the loss.
We ended up finding another wicked nice [even better] 98' 9-3 for within the price the insurance company gave, and all the aftermarket parts fit. If you ask me, it's an even better ride now.
Just a thought.
