The 9-3 & 9-5 engines are the same. The 9000 engine may be a match physically, so long as you're talking a 94/95 or later 9000. Internally there many differences were introduced in the 9-5 and 9-3 series that the 9000 never saw.
The basic design of the 2.3l engine is the same in the 9000, but when Saab came out with the NG 900 in 1994, they had to lop off some length on the motor in order that it fit between the struts with the transmission.
They did this in the area of the timing chain & cover, serp belt and the oil pump. There are also differences in the cylinder heads, enough so they are not interchangeable across that line.
Saab being smart with their kronor, they put the "900" motor into the 9000 from 94 or thereabout. Since the 9-3 is an updated NG 900, it gets the same motor, essentially.
None of this is to say that it's a "drop in" swap! At the least you'd need to do a lot of swapping of bolt-on bits, and there might be something that you just can't make work, depending on the difference in years.
