they are trying to RIP you off, it doesn't sound like they have done much work on Saabs either, and even if you spent the 8k, you would probably wind up with nothing but additional problems as these bozos couldn't screw the motor back together again. No one with any knowledge of the problem with this motor would give you a quote like that and come back with that kind of bulls**t. Too bad you didn't start out with a good Saab indie and a good used motor, it would have cost half of that and you would be more happy with the results.
If I were you I would find out what you owe them so far, negotiate a lower price due to bad faith for the initial lowball estimate and get outta there. I would scrap this car and buy something else, based on your earlier posts, the car will not receive good, regular maintenance (I think a wife or ex wife was driving it) so yet a used Camry. Cars are cheap now...all of them...it is a buyers market. And you, my friend, are gonna be a buyer soon I suspect.
