Well, I found the ring. Tried the platonoff method of working it out with vise-grips instead of going to Sears and buying the right $15 locking ring pliers.
Bent out one side of the ring; decided to buy the pliers. Nothing to push against on the vise-gripped side, so I tried to bend the end of the ring back down. SNAP. The end broke off. Resulting gap to big to span with pliers. Jury-rigged tiny hex keys to expand the ring. Expanded a little bit, whacked the joint with a rubber mallet. Moved just enough to lock the ring. Argh.
Unfortunately, all the pressure I've put on the shaft throughout this process has loosened it from the differential. It now moves back and forth and makes a squishy air sound. There is no apparent fluid anywhere, so it seems the inner boot has held.
So, two questions. HOW do I get that ring out now? One ear is left on it...I hesitate to vise grip and break it, leaving a partial, inaccessible ring. Second, did I completely screw up inner joint, driveshaft, or differential?
Every time I touch a car I screw it up, it seems!
