All you (or the mechanic) need do to check the condition of the sway bar link is to simply remove on of the nuts connecting the link and break it free from the suspension. Once it is hanging free it will be very evident if it is tight (no play), or it is loose and worn (and the source of your noise). Cheap to diagnose, cheap to fix, and VERY common on these cars. Any honest mechanic will know what you're talking about when you ask him to take a look. If it is not the problem, you move on from there, but I'm pretty sure that is your culprit. And of course the best defense against a rip-off is to ask ONLY for a diagnosis and estimate, and if you don't like what you're hearing or you're not comfortable with how you're being treated, take it on down the road for another estimate. Check out other parts of this website for mechanics that may be in your area.
