I did this today on my 2002 9-3SE automatic, 100k mi. Many thanks to Mattias.se, JT, Eric and others who have posted on how to do this. My wife experienced several random times when the starter would not turn over. On each occassion the engine has been warm. After waiting 30 minutes or so it started normally (she didn't know to wiggle the shift lever). This fits the symptoms described by others as a failing neutral safety switch. So I got a new switch from eEuroparts and spent the morning doing this awkward contortionist procedure.
One thing I did that I haven't read was to remove the power steering reservoir from it's bracket. That made moving the power steering hose out of the way much easier.
The first major setback I had was being unable to get the gear selector cable lever arm off the switch shaft. After re-reading all the posts and lots of checking with a mirror to make sure I hadn't missed a nut or something, I finally got it off after lots of wiggling and pulling upward with my fingers. The lever hole and the threaded shaft are a very tight fit on my car.
On reassembly, I discovered there is no pointer on the gear selector lever to align with the scribe mark on the switch as described in all posts on this subject. According to my EPC it appears that only the pre-1988 cable levers have the pointer. So, what do you align the switch to? I ended up putting a miniature T-square on the lever and aligning the switch so its scribe line was parallel to the square and therefore 90 degrees to the lever arm. I've got everything back together and it seems to be working fine, but has anyone got a better method? Is there a Saab-recommended alignment procedure in WIS?
Thanks again to everyone who has posted on the switch replacement. Because of the obstructions and tight spaces it's one of the more difficult things I've done on my Saabs. I'll let you know whether my wife has any more no start events.
