The torque converter has to be recessed as far into the transmission bell housing as possible when mating the engine transmission together. This will leave about 1/2" clearance between the torque converter and the flex plate that you bolt together with the 6 bolts.
If the converter is not seated properly inside the transmission, the engine and flex plate will push it in, damaging the oil pump and splines inside the transmission.
