Thanks Bill H. I've been following a similar troubleshooting list, though not as extensive. I've already done steps (of your list) 1-4 and step 9. While not identified as the sole cause, the rear hatch gasket must be replaced because the two gasket halves have separated from each other over much of their perimeter, with much of the thin connecting piece being torn.
Trunk drain plugs-donuts are in place, and are low on the list of suspects because the trunk gets wet during a heavy rain even when the car is parked the entire time. The water is coming in from above.
Sunroof drains have been verified as being connected and open from end to end. While leak from fuel filler cap has not been ruled out, inspection of the inner fender wall shows no evidence of water stains. I am also looking suspiciously at the mounting points for the rear wing-spoiler, because water stains suggest that water backs up there. Tail lights will shortly be coming out for cleaning and re-sealing or renewal of the gaskets.
Agree that the problem is the design of the rear hatch area. Engineers who designed this should be waterboarded, or, better yet, made to fix problem vehicles on their own time and on their own nickel.
