Ping SWEDECAR - Tonneau Motor Potentiometer adjust?

My '97 tonneau motor went bad (chips out of the big gear as well as the small gear, even though I had the kit on there!). So, I got a used unit from a '96. The gears look good, slight distortion in the case as usual. I took the motor assembly off the '96, re-aligned it, and installed the reenforcement kit on it, and mounted it to the '97 plate. So, that's all set.
Here's my question: I see that the potentiometer setting for the '97 motor I had is different than the setting for the '96 motor. What I don't know is what this control is actually adjusting. So, I'm not sure if I should leave the setting as it is from the '96 motor I am installing or set it to be positioned like the '97 motor I removed (?). Or, am I going to have to make a trip to the dealer no matter what to have it adjusted now?
Thanks for any insight,
