CEL, Charcoal Canister, Purge Valve....

My son was using my 2K 9-3 (80K miles) on vacation and filled the tank at a mountain store/gas station with old, old pumps. The pump kept clicking off as he tried to fill the tank, but he kept trying. As a result he grossly overfilled the tank. Quickly thereafter the car started showing a CEL. The CEL went off after a few hundred miles, but has now recurred twice over the last two weeks (at times unrelated to fill-ups). I've read a lot of the posts about the charcoal canister and the purge valve, but none that I've seen mention overfilling the gas tank as triggering a problem with either device. Car runs great with the CEL on or off, there is no idling problems, all vacuum lines look great, and gas mileage is right where it's always been.
The purge valve is pricey and the canister looks like a pain to access and remove, so I don't want to do either unless I'm convinced there is a direct link between the overfill and the possible failure of either. Anyone had a similar experience?
