Whining noise in engine bay Posted by Gregg [Email] (#677) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gregg) on Sat, 25 Jul 2009 18:38:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've searched the board here and haven't come across anything that matches my symptoms. I've got a whine on the passenger side of the engine. At first I thought it was the idler pulley and replaced that. The whine went away for about 10 minutes and then to begin and progressively get worse.
Yesterday, I thought it might be the alternator. So I started the car to confirm the location of the noise front vs. back and found the whine to be coming from the rear of the engine. Next, I locked disengaged) off the idler pulley and cranked the engine to determine if the noise is generated by any of the pulley's. To my surprise the noise was louder with out the serp. belt engaged. Now, I think that it might be a problem in tensioner pulley area.
The whine doesn't seem to change pitch or increase with engine revolutions. I can't seem to hear it while the car is moving. Even at low speeds.
This engine is new to me (~12000 miles) on it since it was installed in October. It had ~92000 miles according to my indie who installed it. Prior to installing the engine I was told that the timing chain, balance tensioners, guide rails and such were all replaced.
I have not pulled the valve cover and poked around yet. Although, I don't see how anything catastrophic could have happened since October when this engine was open prior to install.
I have no loss of coolant or oil. The oil pressure sensor illuminates when I start the car.
FYI, I also had the clutch replaced when the engine was installed.
Thank you in advance for any help.
