If it's a wheel bearing, you should be able to feel it when the wheel is in the air. Jack the car up securely. You really want to be doing this on stands or a lift, and absolutely chock the wheels that aren't in the air. Grab the wheel at 12 and 6, and rock it back and forth. You want to be pushing with one hand while you pull with the other, and maybe lifting a bit with the hand at 6. It shouldn't really move. Then grab the wheel at 3 and 9, and rock it back and forth. Again, it shouldn't really move. It's harder to tell, since you've got steering play, but you're looking for looseness at the hub.
Given your bad jack experience, you may want to try on the road bearing tests first. If it's the bearing, you should be able to change the noise by turning and changing the load on the bearing. Find an empty parking lot and turn back and forth fairly tightly while you listen carefully. Also, pay attention to your steering - is it sloppier? If the wheel bearing has failed, you might have slop or wander in your steering.
