Is the $1000 just to replace the inner bushings? If so, that's a rip off. They don't cost much and it's not that long a job if you have the press.
Is this guy a Saab indy? If you've managed to wear out the inner bushings, I'll give you pretty good odds that you've worn out the hydraulic bushings that connect the Stanchion arms to the Control Arms. If that's so, you should just replace the arms. The play you feel could definitely result from the inner's being worn but just as likely the mid/hydraulic bushings being worn or dead.
The poly bushings will give you more control but slightly more vibration. They don't wear any faster that anyone has reported.
If you want non-poly arms, go to eeuroparts.com and buy the Febi/Bilstein. For poly, go to genuinesaab.com and buy their arms with the poly installed.
Get new swaybar end links. They don't cost much, the bushings usually need replacement, and they do often break during removal.
FYI - I can't see any danger in driving tghe car unless they are seriously deteriorated. The bolt goes right through them, they'd have to fall apart to cause an issue.
If you're not a DIY guy, have a Saab indy look at them.
