Problem Solved! Thank You All Posted by rmgman [Email] (#334) [Profile/Gallery] (more from rmgman) on Sat, 22 Aug 2009 08:13:51 In Reply to: 9-3s Starts Then Stalls, rmgman [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 18 Aug 2009 15:38:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Sorry, it's taken me a few days to get a followup post. First, I want to thank you all for your ideas and suggestions. I will try to answer some general questions the best I can, since I am not as Mechanically Inclined as you Saab Gurus. That's what's great about coming to Saabnet and getting some information like above.
I am very good at keeping the car well maintained though I don't do the actual work myself. I am religious about the oil and filter change every 3000 miles and all the Saab recalls and Major Services.
The day that the problem occurred, everything seemed to be running normally. Car started like a charm as usual. Drove from my home, making a few turns and stopping at stop signs, etc. All was normal, until I pulled up to the drive through ATM to wait my turn. While idling, that's when the engine conked out on me. I tried restarting, but the engine would not stay running. I was able to finally move it but starting it, moving it into reverse real fast, and then sputtering over to a parking spot where it sat until the AAA tow truck arrived.
I've experienced a "limp home mode" once a few years back, and I knew this was not it since I couldn't even get the car to "limp" after that initial move to the parking spot.
I had my car towed to a local mechanic that specializes in imports, though I would not say he was a Saab Specialist. It actually took him a while to figure out the problem, and that was only because he had a brand new Mercedes in recently that experienced the same kind of issue.
The major cause was my car battery! I or my mechanic did not think this at first because the car did not show the usual signs of a battery failing. He told me once he installed a brand new battery and re-set the system, the car returned to life. This month was actually the 4 year anniversary of when I had the last battery installed. He also did a thorough cleaning of the throttle system, which was somewhat dirty. That may have been another culprit added to the battery problem.
For good measure, since I was approaching the 90,000 mile mark, I had my mechanic do a tune-up and inspection of my belts and hoses, which was wise since my alternator drive belt was getting a little long in the tooth.
Unfortunately, in his inspection he discovered that my lower ball joints are getting to the point of needing replacement. I can't afford the price tag on this at the moment, but now I am aware of it. It never ends, does it?
