I Live in Central Mass- small town. Before installing a used engine myself- I looked into a rebuild. My local SAAB Specialist mechanic was talking about $800 to remove and reinstall a used engine. He gets approx $62 per hr.
There is also a local Master engine builder/ re builder. He does it all- machining, etc. He quoted me $1000 for just for labor. I would estimate parts to be 1000- $1500. And Like I said before- with my engine swap. I replaced ever wear item that could be a problem down the road- entire clutch, hoses, T-stat belts, O rings, seals, pulleys, replaced tranny fluid, plugs, filters, etc. And that was another $1000. So with a used engine, my labor, and all of the parts, I have approx $2500. And to be honest, the used engine was a gamble- but for $1200 I took a chance and think it was worth it. I couldn't afford the rebuild the time.
So besides the rebuild, you need to consider what else you want to replace while it's out. Unless the clutch has low miles or plenty of life- there is another $500 to consider.
good luck
Glen
