The answer is to be found in your mechanics statement about the fan resistors.
He might not know the proper design of this car since he mention one speed fan on yours. But than again he seems to know about the 9000 design which is more or less identical to yours on the later years.
What might have happened is that your low speed fan resistor has died (very common and many posts about the issue if you search) and the cooling fan is not coming on until the engine is hot enough to trigger the emergency high speed fan.
This can easily be tested by jumping the low and then the high speed fan relays in the engine compartment relay box.
Your friends car also have an issue if the gauge is not in the middle and it could be a wrong thermostat or a thermostat that opens oo early.
