I have a 1996 900SET with only 43,000 miles. Blew the upper radiator hose going up a steep mountain road recently. To my knowledge, the hoses have never been changed so it was a wake-up call. For me, clearly the hoses are reaching the end of their design life.
To make matters worse, because I was on a 2 lane mountain road with no shoulder, I had to keep driving until I could find a pull-out while watching the engine overheat. Surprisingly, so far there appears to be no engine damage.
Was forced to adapt a hose just to get me back home. Have since replaced the top radiator hose with a hose from Pep Boys.
Now, I'd like to replace the rest of the hoses. Anyone have a good DIY guide to hose replacement?
Just check the oil and the coolant to see if there is any contamination that might indicate a damaged engine or blown gasket. If all looks as it should, it is simply hose replacement time.
