Upper Radiator hose question

So the upper radiator hose suddenly decided to pop off of the radiator as I was stuck in traffic earlier tonight in my 1998 Saab 900S. After seeing the horrific mass of white smoke emanate from beneath my hood, I immediately pulled over and carefully inspected all the hoses and connections. Luckily, I was fortunate enough not only to have some shoulder space to pull off on to, but also to have an auto parts store only 200 yards away where I bought a gallon of coolant along with a new hose clamp. After patching her up and parially emptying to bottle of coolant, she ran perfectly fine for the next 7 miles back home without any further incident.
My concern is: What could have possibly caused the upper radiator hose to randomly pop off like that? A faulty hose clamp? The hose itself appears strong with no evidence of any leakage. Perhaps excess pressure in that area? A sticky thermostat?
Just wondering if this is a sign of a more serious underlying problem yet to come, or simply a random freak accident. Any ideas, anyone?
