Fuel pump replacement gone wrong...advice?

I'm in the middle of replacing my fuel pump. I dropped the tank rather than cut a hole in the floor. But in the process I made the dreaded mistake of breaking the L-shaped connector for the return line to the pump. If you know anything about this, you'll remember that Saab sells only the complete line (all the way from the pump to the front of the car) with the connector attached, and it's quite pricey. On the other hand, a site sponsor sells only the connector. I'm going to try this first, but here's the problem. The line is made of a tough plastic material and it is connected to the coupler VERY tightly - almost like a shrink-to-fit. You probably know what I'm describing (and it's probably why Saab sells only the complete line!). Have any of you had experience - good or bad - trying to insert new connections into this type of hose? Is there a technique that is followed when they are manufactured? Are they "heat shrunk"? I appreciate your interest.
