Clutchless shifting is just a matter of matching the engine speed to the gear you're attempting to select, it takes some finesse, but its easily manageable without grinding gears. Shifting up is just a matter of allowing the engine to slow down to match the next gear, downshifting just requires revving up to match the lower gear. I replaced my cable when I did the release bearing, assuming the adjustment mechanism was too worn out. A couple thousand miles later, the replacement cable broke and I put the original back in; I've never had another problem. The hydraulic upgrade is worthwhile, but like I said it's a significant expense and requires a lot more planning than a simple cable replacement. I certainly don't think the upgrade is a bad idea, but it should be done for the right reasons. Keep in mind few people have the financial means to undertake such an expensive upgrade on such short notice.
