I've done the coathanger thing, that's the first check. Bend a coathanger & stick it into the drain hole next oil change. Wipe it around as best you can & see if it catches any crud.
Oil sludge is old oil that has been thickened by heat. Grainy crud, lumps, etc. It's NORMAL for the oil to get blackened, but it's not normal to find solid grainy stuff in there.
It's a lot easier to remove the valve cover & look for sludge, vs. removing the oil pan. But naturally the sludge will sink down to the pan, so if you REALLY want to be sure you should remove the pan.
Finally, along with 10k oil changes, the owner's manual calls for SEMI-synthetic oil. Using FULL-synthetic oil should keep you out of trouble.
