Well, I'm not that old, only 35, but I'm pretty darn geeky. Admittedly, there were at least a dozen or so cars that I've had that were purchased in need of repair and sold immediately after the repairs were done, but most of the life's fleet were basically used as stepping stones. I'd buy a car, fix it, drive it for a while until I found a better car, and then sell the previous car for profit.
Unfortunately, the only problem that my modifications have caused on my Saab is the blown reverse dog-ring. Other than that, the car has gone through two turbos, a clutch, a DI cassette, steering rack, rusted shock tower, and a few other things before the modifications were done. I don't have the money to fix the car, and don't know when I will, and once the engine is done, I'll have a lot more to worry about still. The school semester is coming to a close, and I'll have time to tear most of the valuable parts off the car; I don't really intend to strip it down completely. The little bit of time it takes to do the shipping is negligable, I've been selling stuff online for years so I'm pretty well versed in that.
I have a friend that has offered me her '96 Volvo 960 wagon for $1200. The car is in good condition, has been well maintained, and only has 150,000 miles on it. The Volvo sure won't give me the smiles per mile my Saab has, but it will serve a very important function my Saab was never able to serve; I'll be able to put my canoe on the roof.
I think what you said applies to my current situation more than you might think. I like my Saab, but it's an expensive car to own. I think I need to get rid of it and have something a little more modest until I get back into the work force. Then I can go back to having a fast car.
Thanks for all the advice, stay tuned for my classified add, to be posted within a few hours. Anybody want to upgrade to a STAGE 5 CHEAP?
