....moisture in them. At best of time it's virtually impossible to keep water and moisture out and when you introduce seams where pieces of metal come together...good luck! Also, once rust has started, the pitted metal creates small nooks and crannies for moisture to get. Paint can be pretty good at 'creeping' into small spaces specially if that paint is the slow drying type...that's why rust paints tend not to be quick drying lacquers. But even paint has it's limitations.

Now try any of the rubberized or tar based 'rust proofing' (note many don't even promote themselves as such but 'rock guard' or 'sound deadening'....for a reason!). These substances do not flow and will instead from a barrier OVER the seam/pit/whatever. Once water/moisture gets into that space it will be trapped and rust can now really happen. And that's the real scary part....you won't see the damage until you have a hole....I know, many years ago I bought a sports car that had sheets of the stuff falling off the bottom to reveal an almost completely rusted out floor pan...thus the welding course.

Our cars are getting at that age when the factory rubberized coating will be starting to fail. Check around the many rubber plugs in the floor pan and chances are there's rust forming around that plug. To keep that from spreading I'll scratch off the rubberized stuff, apply some 'Rust Check' and let it dry and then cover that with WaxOyl. The Rust Check is very light and will flow into the smallest of crack but it will also wash off with time. The WaxOyl is like greasy honey and it will protect the Rust Check and yet in warm weather flows to seal itself if it gets scratched. This is the only way I know of to really stop rust.

Good luck with the rubberized stuff and keep your eyes on it...or should I say, what's behind it! Sometimes trying to make things better, you can actually make them worse.
