First of all, I strongly suggest driving it hard, which I think can tell a lot. Keep an eye on the rear view mirror for smoke, and just redline it through a couple gears. Second, like most og 9-3's and 4 cyl. 9-5's, oil sludge can be a problem, but you won't have the means to check that on a test drive. Overall though, if the car looks well-maintained, that's a huge plus. If I saw a nasty engine compartment, a Fram oil filter being used, a dirty interior, things in need of repair, cheap replacement parts, etc, I would just walk away. Saab's are not typically forgiving when it comes to poor preventive maintenance, so beware.
