Ha! my nuts ... :)
Yes, I did bleed the slave.
When I last re-installed the old tranny, just 6 weeks ago, I followed Dimitri's excellent howtos (link below). The result wqs excellent shifting. Really, very very good shifting.
His write-up did not mention anything about leaving the throwout piston in or out so I had left it out. This resulted in a puddle of brake fluid on the floor when I installed the transmission, which freaked me out at first but was not a problem.
This time I read WIS as well, and the instructions are about the same except in WIS it says to leave the slave piston in the in position after bleeding it, which I did.
It could be that I did this poorly, I am not too sure. I guess I was hoping to eliminate this by thinking that with the engine off this would not come into play? I mean, if the shifting is the same (poor), both with the engine on using the clutch and just selecting gears in the garage with the engine off, would this not point to something other than the slave cylinder not being bled properly?
Also with your suggestion about the pushing the clutch in overnight - I will try this. I have bled the clutch twice in addition to bleeding the slave and the pedal does nto feel that bad. I did drive with wheels in the air for a bit, and I could engage the gears without grinding, though the selection of those gears was tricky, so I guess I sort of ruled out the clutch hydraulics in general.
I guess in my mind I am stuck on the fact that it feels the same whether I'm using the clutch or not. Maybe I have a bad logic switch in my head or something, but if the clutch is the issue, wouldn't it only affect things when I have the car running and am shifting using the clutch?
Or would a poorly bled slave / clutch also affect the car cold in the garage just selecting gears?
Thanks.
