Hello fellow Saab aficionados.
I have found a 1998 Saab 900 SET for sale with 71xxx miles on the odo. The body looks pretty nice but there are some issues with it that need some investigation.
The current owner claims that the previous owner had not paid registration for many years and I matched the VIN number against registration charges, which work out to roughly ~ $700 odd. On top of this, there is no Catalytic Converter (it must have been used as a parts car or something to that effect).
The current owner says all it needs the Cat and the DMV fees for it to be good to go. He's asking $1100 obo.
I've done a little research on the vehicle (the car and I are both located in CA therefore Smog is an issue): According to the DMV's online smog record check, the last time the vehicle was smogged was 2001. I have also spoken with a local independent saab mechanic who quoted approx $400 for a used Cat or $500 for a new Cat, though if a new Cat is installed, the vehicle would have to pass the newest standards for the smog (kind of unfair to expect a 13 year old car to do so, isn't it?).
For a car with a slightly dubious history, is the price of admission plus cost of known problems worth taking it up without fully knowing the unknown issues ...?
I will leave all the conjectures up to you as I already have many swimming in my head.
Thanks in advance.
